It’s been 15 years since the last film, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, and now it looks as if Witherspoon is ready to add another chapter to the life of the iconic Elle Woods, after coming to an agreement with film studio MGM.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Reese Witherspoon as the 2001 original about the irresponsible sorority girl turned legal hotshot, and its 2003 sequel, are responsible for making her the top-billing star she is today.

While there are no details yet regarding the plot for the third instalment you’ve got to hope the clue from the last film suggests Ms Woods has her sights firmly on the White House.

Considering the highly volatile climate of today’s political landscape, particularly in America, it will be interesting to see how Elle navigates in the era of President Donald Trump and #MeToo.

According to the BBC, Witherspoon will co-produce the long-awaited third film through her own media company Hello Sunshine, whose mission ‘celebrates women and puts them at the centre of the story’ and exists to ‘shine a light on where women are at right now and those that help chart a new path forward’.

Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr, states while the film’s plot is being kept ‘under wraps’ he’s been told it will channel the spirit of the first Legally Blonde, where Woods’ idealism and pink-dominant wardrobe challenges ‘the cynicism and snootiness’ she’s surrounded by after being unceremoniously kicked out of her sorority by heading to law school.

Legally Blonde 2 takes Woods to Washington D.C. where she joins the staff a congresswoman to pass a bill to ban animal testing.

Fleming Jr says:

The intention here is to make this more about female empowerment, a message that hits at a fortuitous time in the culture. The feeling is to draw back in the audience that grew up with the original film and find a new global audience.

The 42-year-old actor will also be reuniting with the original creative team of Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith and Karen McCullah, who adapted the Amanda Brown’s novel for the 2001 film. The two are currently lined up to write the new script.

Both Smith and McCullah have been credited for their work on 10 Things I Hate About You, The House Bunny, She’s the Man and The Ugly Truth.

Reese Witherspoon has made no secret of her desire to return to the pink suits of Elle Woods, in an interview with James Corden on the Late Late Show… she told the host:

Yeah, yeah I would [do it]!

I think it’d be kind of cool to see her 15 years later, like what’s she doing now? What do you think? I don’t know. But I need a good idea.

We can’t wait to see the return of Elle Woods, in all her power suit glory.
