Why Ed Sheeran Was In The ‘Game Of Thrones’ Season 7 Premiere

Game of Thrones fans who tuned in to watch the season 7 premiere of the HBO drama last night (July 16) were in for quite the surprise when none other than Ed Sheeran popped up in a scene.

Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) encounters Sheeran when she comes across him leading a group of his fellow bannermen – in what else? — a sing along. The men invite her to join their dinner, before letting her in on the woes of being soldiers. While Sheeran doesn’t have many lines, he responds to Arya complimenting his song by telling her “it’s a new one.”

Sheeran’s involvement in the upcoming season wasn’t as tightly held a secret as some other storylines, but many viewers were still caught off guard by seeing such a recognizable pop star in Westeros. So what prompted the extra special cameo?

Take Our Poll

According to showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, Sheeran was primarily cast to surprise Williams, who is apparently a huge fan of the singer.

“For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it,” Benioff said at SXSW back in March when announcing the singer’s casting, as reported by Variety.

As EW points out, Sheeran is hardly the first singer to turn up on Game of Thrones (Coldplay’s Will Champion and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody are among the musicians who have made appearances in the past), but his cameo is definitely among the most notable.

While there’s no word yet on whether Sheeran will be back in future episodes, his scene did leave the door open for another appearances. After all, the Starks and the Lannisters could very well go to head this season, which means there’s always a chance for Arya to collide once more with her favorite singing bannerman.
