A now-former teacher in Texas who was impregnated by a 13-year-old student pleas guilty.
24-year-old Alexandria Vera pleaded guilty to a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child, which holds a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Under the plea deal, however, her punishment is maxed at 30 years, as well as being eligible for deferred adjudication probation.
“We’re very much hoping for deferred adjudication,” said her defense attorney Ricardo Rodriguez.
Deferred adjudication is a form of probation that would leave her without a conviction on her record if she successfully goes through the tie period without incident.
Ms. Vera has been free on a $100,000 bail, but has had to wear an ankle monitor, keep away from schools, and have no contact with the teen who is alleged to have gotten her pregnant. According to court records, she later had an abortion.
She initially faced a punishment of 25-to-life in prison if convicted on the charge of continuous sexual assault of a child, a felony which carries a heightened punishment, even for first offenders.
What complicated the case was the fact that the victim’s family knew about the forbidden relationship and supported it.
