The parents of an infant just 16 days old have been arrested after the child was was injured last week by scalding water and they chose to do nothing.
25-year-old Patric Edward Eddy and 26-year-old Candace Mercedes Matthews claimed they were “too high” on meth to bother getting care for the baby.
The injury occurred Tuesday evening at a 16-year-old babysitter’s residence. The teen was giving the baby a bath and inadvertently turned off the cold water, believing it was the hot water.
The girl then told her mother what happened, and her mother called the child’s parents. They came and picked the child up and took her home.
The mother of the babysitter visited them to check on the baby and saw her in a bed crying.
According to the arrest affidavit, she says the infant’s diaper was “full of urine and feces.” The couple were asleep in a bed next to the little girl. She then reportedly observed a burn on the child’s stomach that she described as “awful”. She then tried to wake the girl’s mother up and ask her if she wanted to take the child to the hospital.
She reportedly agreed, but took it to her mother, a former nurse, instead. She, in turn, told her to get the infant to a hospital.
The wasted woman then reportedly called 911.
The little girl was then taken to the Air Evac Lifeteam headquarters with first and second-degree burns on 40% of her body.
She’s being transferred to a burn center in Texas, where she’ll spend at least a month recovering.
The couple are said to have admitted that they were under the influence of meth.
Bail was set at $250,000 for both of them and they remain in custody at the Pontotoc County Justice Center.
