Michael Weatherly may no longer be on NCIS, but the familial ties live on!
While speaking with TVLine, NCIS series co-showrunner Frank Cardea revealed that there are two characters coming back this season, and one has a major tie-in with the former Agent “Tony” DiNozzo (played by Weatherly).
People’s Choice has confirmed that Robert Wagner will be reprising his role as Anthony DiNozzo Sr. aka Junior’s father (as he calls himself) in season 15. While CBS has not yet confirmed when Weatherly’s TV dad will pop up this season, the last time fans saw the character was in the season 14 episode “Nonstop,” which found the team joining forces with the Sherlocks. The consistency of Wagner’s appearances (11 over the past 14 seasons) gives us hope that Weatherly, who left the series in 2016, will return in the future and the father and son duo will be reunited.
Fueling the idea that we might get to see Weatherly back on NCIS? The Bull star recently revealed to DigitalSpy that he “very keen to explore” a reunion with his NCIS family, so now all we need is a perfect way for him to transition back into the team – and what better way than with the help of his father?
In addition to Wagner Jr.’s upcoming appearance, co-showrunner Cardea revealed to TV Line that Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ (Mark Harmon) longtime friend, and FBI favorite, Senior Agent T.C. Fornell, is also set to appear.
In addition to the returning characters, NCIS is also welcoming an entirely new face next season as Mario Bello joins the cast.
NCIS returns for season 15 on September 26, 2017 on CBS.
