A Maryland mother fatally kicked her four-year-old daughter in the stomach for not brushing her teeth.
20-year-old Iris Herndanez Rivas is accused of the unspeakable act that occurred on January 26th.
Four-year-old Nohely Alexandra Martinez Hernandez died on Wednesday.
On January 26th, Ms. Rivas called 911 at about 12:30 p.m. and said her daughter was unresponsive.
She told responding officers that her daughter had gone into the bathroom at roughly 11:15 a.m. and turned the shower on.
After around 15 to 20 minutes, she claims, she “heard a noise from the bathroom,” which prompted her to check on her daughter.
When she opened the door, she says she saw her daughter face down in the tub, then inexplicably waited about an hour to cal 911.
The little girl was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The medical staff told investigators that the victim had “multiple bruises on her body” and “had head trauma that may have been from the result of physical abuse”.
She was flown to a hospital in D.C. and succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday.
Ms. Rivas talked to detectives the next day.
She said that at about 10:30 a.m. on the morning before, she’d kicked the little girl in the belly after getting upset at her for not brushing her teeth.
The young victim then fell backwards, according to her mother, and hit her head on the living room wall. She then fell to the ground and “appeared lethargic”.
She claims the bruises that were found were the result of her punishing her daughter with a belt several days prior.
Ms. Rivas was arrested on January 28th.
She’s been charged with first-degree child abuse and first-degree assault.
She’s being held without bond, and the results of the little girl’s autopsy are pending.
Authorities have said that they’re waiting for an official cause of death before they determine if those charges will be upgraded.
