Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in director Quentin Tarantino’s upcoming film about the infamous Charles Manson murders.

The movie will see DiCaprio return to the big screen following his short break after his first ever Oscar win in 2016 for The Revenant.

He is the first actor to be confirmed for the film that will be Tarantino’s ninth as director.

Set to be released August 9, 2019, the as of yet untitled film will see the man behind Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs tackle the notorious murders of five people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate, by the followers of Charles Manson in 1968.

According to Deadline, DiCaprio will play an ‘ageing actor’ so not Manson himself.

The actor has worked with Tarantino before on the fantastic Django Unchained which saw him play the unhinged plantation owner Calvin Candie who took a chilling liking to having a hammer as a weapon.

With cameras due to roll this summer it won’t be long until the casting is complete and there are plenty of exciting rumours flying around about who may be joining DiCaprio.

As reported by Deadline, Tarantino has asked Margot Robbie to take on the role of Tate, the eight-and-a-half month pregnant wife of director Roman Polanski who was murdered at her home.

Robbie has of course worked with DiCaprio before in director Martin Scorsese’s unforgettable The Wolf Of Wall Street which saw the two share some truly electric scenes together.

Hollywood mega stars Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Al Pacino have also been rumoured to be circling the project too which looks set to be quite exciting.

Not much is currently known about the plot which is being kept tightly under wraps although it will reportedly take place in Los Angeles 1969 and will not be a straight-up biopic of the notorious cult leader.

The release date actually coincides with the 50th anniversary of Tate’s brutal murder at the hands of the Manson family.

Manson died last year on November 20 at the age of 83 after suffering from ill health.

His health had been steadily deteriorating for some time and in January he was hospitalised for severe intestinal bleeding and although it was found he needed surgery, he was deemed too weak by doctors and sent back to prison.

Since he was imprisoned in 1971 – he was originally sentenced to death but got a reprieve when the death sentence was abolished in California – Manson has had ‘hundreds’ of rules violations and has been caught with a mobile phone and a number of homemade weapons.

Manson’s crimes saw him become something of a morbid pop-culture icon and his trademark swastika tattoo in the middle of his brow has become synonymous with the evil killer.

Before his terrible crimes Manson enjoyed extremely limited success as a musician through a chance association with Beach Boys founder Dennis Wilson.
