A Florida man who tried to steal a staggering $7 billion said it was because Jesus wanted him to be wealthy.
John Michael Haskew said that when he fraudulently transferred $7 billion in more than 70 wire transfers on December 9th and 10th, the Lord was behind him in his deeds.
When asked why he’d done it, he purportedly told authorities that, “Jesus Christ created wealth for everyone,” according to the criminal complaint. Using this scheme, he believed that he could obtain the wealth “that Jesus Christ created for him and that belonged to him,” it continued.
It’s not clear where he transferred the funds to, but authorities say that he bragged that he was “self-taught on the banking industry” and had, through experimentation, figured out how to make the fraudulent transfers.
He’s unemployed and reportedly owed money to the government.
As part of a plea deal, he pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement to the federal government.
He faces up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
