Do you remember when Ed Sheeran took a year off from the music industry? It was a dark time, and all of his fans were upset, but at least now we know why he took the hiatus in the first place… he was struggling with substance abuse.
While filming an episode of The Jonathan Ross Show, the “Shape of You” singer opened up about the fact that he actually fell victim to the darker side of fame, which is what led to him having to take some time off.
“I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to it — and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour. And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse,” Sheeran told the talk show host, Jonathan Ross this week via People. “I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off.”
The British singer admitted that his year-long hiatus was definitely needed in order to focus on his career, and a healthier personal life.
“I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence, I can’t write under the influence, I can’t perform under the influence — so the more I worked the less [that happened]. I’ve worked my whole life to get where I am and you can’t lose that over something that you do in your spare time,” he explained before noting that his friends, girlfriend, and family got him back on track.
“I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down,’” Sheeran continued. “It’s all so fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not so that was a wake-up call and taking a year off.”
We are so grateful that Sheeran took the time he needed to refocus his life and his career, and as a result we are now going to be able to see the artist on his upcoming world tour, which starts in the States in August 2018.
