In December, Camila Cabello left Fifth Harmony. While there has been a lot of speculation as to why the young star left the group, she hasn’t said much about the reason, except that she wanted to pursue her own solo career.
Now, Cabello is explaining once and for all why being in Fifth Harmony wasn’t working for her at the time of her exit.
In an interview with Billboard last month, the Cuban-American singer got real about her decision to leave.
“I felt like I could hear everything my heart was telling me,” Cabello told Billboard’s Chris Martins.
The 19-year-old singer explained that she could’ve continued to sing other people’s songs, but that wasn’t her.
“The easiest route would be to shut my mouth, sing the songs, wear the clothes and keep going, you know?” Cabello said about her decision. “I mean, [we were] at the peak of our career. It’s definitely not the safe option.”
As for what really made her want to leave once and for all, it was the idea that she was singing a lie, someone else’s stories.
“I was always super open [that] I couldn’t just sing other people’s words and be totally happy with that. You have to follow and honor that inner voice. I always encouraged the girls to do the same,” she explained.
Original music has always been Cabello’s goal and nothing was going to stop her from getting it.
“We didn’t write our records. We were interpreting somebody else’s story, “ she continued. “Fifth Harmony is an entity or identity outside all of us, and I don’t think anybody felt individually represented by the sound — we didn’t make it.”
While we are all sad that Fifth Harmony no longer includes Cabello, it’s truly inspiring how focused she is to succeed on her own, in her own words and fresh songs. You go girl!
